Square Dance Plus Calls
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G0lO6VBXnTU
Fan the Top:
From wave, center dancers cast off ¾ while ends move up ¼
Acey Deucey:
From wave, centers trade while ends circulate (Can also be done from diamonds: centers trade, ends circulate)
Teacup Chain
Head ladies chain to next man on R, side ladies go directly to man on R, arm turn w/ man. Repeat 3X, courtesy turn at end.
Ping Pong Circulate
From wave in the middle: those in the wave extend to outside & partner trade, while those on the outside step forward into the new wave. In other words, the wave people and outside people basically trade positions with the couple they’re facing.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eLihbD88dYY
Grand Swing Thru:
From Tidal Wave, everyone does ½ by the R, and those who can do ½ by the L
Diamond Circulate:
Stay within the same diamond! Centers of the diamond become points, points of the diamond become centers. Move forward 1/4 of the diamond, within the same diamond, to the next position. "Normal" diamond, you will see the back of the person whose place you are going to take. When it's a "facing diamond" (where. you can see the face of the person whose place you are about to take), and you will end facing the opposite way from the dancer whose position you just took. Call starts in a diamond and ends in a diamond.
Flip the Diamond:
Starts from "normal" diamond, ends in ocean wave. Points/ends of the diamond will flip 180º on the same side to become center of ocean wave, while centers of the diamond do a normal diamond circulate. The diamond has now become an ocean wave with the same group of dancers. Sort of like a diamond circulate, but the ends will turn 180º as they become the center of the ocean wave. (And instead of one "diamond" ocean wave across both sides of the square, there are now 2 ocean waves in a perpendicular directions to the original diamond wave.)
Cut the Diamond:
Starts from a "normal" diamond [where you see the back of the dancer ahead of you in the diamond] and ends in a 2-face line. Points of the diamond will essentially slide together, join inside hands and trade with each other, while centers of the diamond do a normal diamond circulate. Ends up in a 2-face line with the same group of dancers. Sort of like a “Flip the diamond” except that points have traded instead of staying largely in place, and ending in a 2-face line instead of a wave.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_KmbuMsy1KQ
Load the Boat:
From 2 lines both facing in: ends circulate on outside passing 3 people and turn to face in, while centers do a (no-hands) pass-thru, ¼ out, partner trade (w/ person you just passed), and pass-thru.
Peel Off:
Basically, "leaders" separate away from center of column, and do a U-turn back, while "followers" step forward and do a U-turn back to form perpendicular lines (either 2-face, or facing).
Starting position can be 2 road columns (each dancer like a car on the road, about to pass on the right), with 1st 3 dancers aligned w/ 1st 3 dancers of the other column. Ends in 2-face lines perpendicular to the columns. 1st and 2nd dancers from the column will face in, while 3rd and 4th dancers will face out. 1st dancer in the column steps fwd, separates, and does u-turn back to face in. 2nd dancer follows to face in beside him. They will form one line (facing in) with the 3rd and 4th dancers from the other column, who will face out. 3rd dancer in column separates and does a U-turn to face out in a new line with first two dancers from other column. 4th dancer basically steps forward and does a U-turn in place to face out.
Can also be done from a double-pass-thru formation, in which case lines will be completely facing instead of half of the line facing out. Leaders separate and do a U-turn back to become ends of the line. Trailing dancers step forward and U-turn back to become centers of the line.
Linear Cycle (waves only):
Done within the same wave group. Starting from ocean waves: Hinge, fold, follow, and peel. Do a single hinge. Dancers now facing out fold behind dancers facing in. Dancers are now in columns of 2 dancers each. Do a double pass thru. Peel to the R (everyone do a u-turn to the R with leaders “flipping” to make room) to make facing lines.
(Anything) and Spread:
Centers split apart and outside dancers step forward to join hands in new formation. E.g., Wheel and Deal, and spread (starts in 2-face lines and ends in weird lines with centers facing in and ends facing out). Or: Ferris Wheel, and spread. (Starts in 2-face lines and ends in facing lines).
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R3o_5U5aKMM
Coordinate:
Starts in right-hand columns, everyone paired boy/girl. Circulate 1 ½ places, Center 6 (same sex pairs) will trade, ends move up (to make ends of 2-face “veered L” lines).
Crossfire:
Starts from 2 face “veered L” lines as in end of Coordinate. Boys cross-fold (behind starting far girl’s position in same line) while girls trade and extend (step fwd) to pair w/ boy.
(Anything) and Roll:
Turn ¼ more in direction you’re already going.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8YmeKqDE_pM
Track II:
Starts in a double-pass-thru position, boys usually on L, girls on R. Ends in ocean waves. Boys will loop to R to become ends of an ocean wave, lead boy going to far wave. Girls will loop to L, with lead girl going to far wave.
Single Circle to an Ocean Wave:
With dancer straight ahead, join both hands, circle L ½, step fwd into an ocean wave.
Spin Chain the Gears:
Starts from Ocean Waves. Everyone turn ½ by the R. Centers (usually boys) do ¾ by the L to form a wave, center 2 (boys) trade. Meanwhile outside dancers (girls) do U-turn back. Make L-hand stars. Turn each star ¾ to make a wave (of girls). Boys peel away from center (spread & U-turn) to become ends of new waves. Meanwhile center girls trade, then girls cast off ¾ to make waves.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RRQf5iPKhck
Trade the Wave:
Starting from a wave, ending in a different wave with the same group. “Take a peek” to see who in the same wave is also facing in the same direction (in or out) and trade positions with that dancer. Ends facing out will become centers facing in, etc.
Relay the Deucey:
Starting in waves, person you start with in the right hand you will end up with by the right hand. Do ½ turn by the R. Centers do ¾ by the L. Ends (girls) circulate (walk up) so that 2 ends attach to large wave. Tidal wave does grand swing thru. End boys get off wave, girl (who was not part of grand swing thru) gets on. In the large wave, do ½ by R, girls do ¾ by the L while boys move up to form 2 waves. If you’re looking in at the beginning of the call, you will do swing thru. If looking out, you will circulate.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2f0I5T7eIH0
Explode the Wave:
Done by dancers within the same wave. Starts in a wave, ends in back-to-back box facing out.) Step fwd, turn to the dancer with whom you would trade the wave, and pull by. The center of the "box" (or line) is now perpendicular to the wave direction.
Explode and (Anything):
Step fwd, turn to the center of the wave, wait for the next call.
Follow Your Neighbor (and Spread):
Done by 2 couples in column formation, holding ptr by R. Dancers facing in, do a cast off ¾ by the R to become centers of a L-handed ocean wave. Meanwhile, dancers facing out, move up or circulate, then turn to their R ¾ to become ends of the L-handed wave. If “and spread” is called, center dancers (boys) spread to make the outside dancers (girls) the center of a R-handed wave.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vp4r1dGsb_8
Chase Right:
Starts from back-to-back couples. Girls do U-turn back, then box circulate 2 positions.
Spin Chain Exchange the Gears:
Starting from ocean waves, out-facing girl will be the leader. Turn ½ by the R. Boys turn by the L ¾ as girls do U-turn back. Center boys trade. Turn star ½ by the L and drop h’s. “Follow the leader” as leaders pass diagonally by R shoulders and then curves around to the R. Boy behind leader takes her R and trades with leader and put her in the center of the ocean wave facing out. (Other boy takes the R hand of the girl he is following, so that she becomes the center of the wave and facing in.
¾ Tag the Line:
Starts from a wave. Dancer individually turn to face the center of the wave [where the girls’ hands are joined] to form columns. Full tag is 4 steps, ½ tag is 2 steps, ¾ tag is 3 steps). Boys are now in a wave, with the girls facing out.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lcYMKieGFNk
Peel the Top:
Starting in 2-couple facing column, girls folded behind boys. Ends in regular R-handed ocean wave. Girls step fwd & cast off ¾ by the L and become the centers of an ocean wave (like Pass the Ocean with an additional 1/2 turn). Boys peel to their R (walk in about 3/4 of a circle) and end up on the ends of the wave.
All 8 Spin the Top:
Starts with men in L-hand star position holding girls by the R like an allemande thar. Do ½ by the R (puts the ladies into a L-hand star). Ladies turn the star ¾ by the L as boys move up ¼ to take same girl by the R. (Can start w/ ladies in L-hand star, so that the men turn the star while the ladies move up.) Summary: ½ by the right, turn the star ¾ while the ends move up.
Dixie Grand:
Starts in facing columns of 4 dancers each, boys on the L, girls on the R. Center (facing) dancers, pull by the R. Everyone pulls by the L. Everyone pulls by the R (ends of the column will face each other). Takes you to your corner for an allemande L.
Tricky Mainstream Calls

Tag the Line (all the way through):
Start from a 2-face ocean wave (dancer and partner face the same way, other 2 dancers in wave face the opposite direction). Ends in a double-pass-through formation. Face the center of your wave/line, Do a double pass-thru (4 steps) with dancers from the same wave/line (passing R shoulders).
Half-Tag the Line:
Similar to Tag the line all the way through, but starts from a regular ocean wave and only take 2 steps instead of 4. Ends with each 2 dancers in new ocean waves with 2 dancers from the other ocean wave. Start from a 2-face ocean wave (dancer and partner face the same way, other 2 dancers in wave face the opposite direction). Face the center of your wave/line, Do a double pass-thru with dancers from the same wave/line (passing R shoulders).
Recycle:
Starts from an ocean wave. Girls do a U-turn back (to make a 2-face line), couples do a wheel-and-deal.
8-Chain-Four (also 8-Chain-Six, 8-Chain-Thru):
Starts from a wheel-and-dealed position (facing another couple, square is in columns). 1, everyone pulls by the right. 2, centers pull by the left while the ends do a courtesy turn. 3, everyone pulls by the right. 4, centers pull by the left while the ends do a courtesy turn. (Also, 8-chain 6, 8-chain thru (or 8), etc. Just continue counts, courtesy touring on the ends on even counts.
Spin-Chain Thru:
From Ocean Waves, turn 1/2 by the right, those who can turn 3/4 by the left, centers trade by the right, Those who can turn 3/4 by the left again. Ends in ocean wave with one new person in the wave.
Wheel and Deal:
Starts from 2-face line, ends in a box with the same couples. Basically, from a 2-face line, girls drop center hands and rotate the entire 2-face line 1/4 (pivot point is between the couples). Then couples rotate as individual couples (pivot point is within the couples, man walking forward, lady walking backwards) 1/4 more, to end up facing the other couple and facing the opposite wall from which you started. If you smooth it out, girls will be walking backwards the whole time. See https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aMGZhDwZE6Q and https://www.dehnbase.org/sd/tutorial/qt-wheel-and-deal.php
Ferris Wheel
Starting from parallel 2-face lines (really the same starting formation as wheel and deal, but opposite lines will interact, pair of dancers facing in will see the backs of the pair of dancers facing out in the other line), ends in columns facing in (a pre-double-pass-thru-formation). Basically, the couples facing in walk forward to a 2-face line formation in the center with the couple from the other line and does a wheel and deal, while the couples facing out do a wheel and deal independently from other couples.
Extend:
Move up to the next fractional tag position. (Typically used from a 1/4 tag position.) See http://definition.nanninga.myds.me/en/basic-2/41-extend/?print=print for the various tag formations from which an extend can be done.
Scoot Back:
Done in group of 4, basically, half of an ocean wave across from another half of an ocean wave. Ends with the same partner as if you just turned 1/2 by the right. Facing dancers meet in the center and turn 1/2 by the right, then walk forward and join hands with original partner. Meanwhile, dancers facing out flip over 180º as if turning 1/2 by the right with the now absent partner.
Triple Scoot:
Basically, a "grand scoot back." Starts in columns. 2 end dancers facing out do a 180º flip over like a normal scoot back. Other 6 dancers turn 1/2 by the right with the dancer facing you as if doing a scoot back. (Will end up with original partner as if having done a 1/2 turn by the right.)
